You can plan a trip with your CPAP, but carrying it and using it during a flight are separate questions. Contact the operating airline with your exact device and itinerary before departure. A machine accepted in a bag is not automatically approved for in-flight operation.

What to ask the airline before you book

  • Will my exact CPAP model be accepted in the cabin, and how does its bag count toward my allowance?
  • If I need to use it in flight, which device approval, medical documents and advance notice are required?
  • Which batteries and connectors are permitted, and what battery reserve does the airline require?
  • Do the same arrangements apply to every operating airline on my connections?

Keep the airline’s written response with the flight details and model name. If you need treatment during the journey or are unsure how to manage a delay, discuss the plan with your treating team before booking.

Air India and IndiGo: check the published rules

Air India’s CPAP guidance specifies FAA/EASA-approved equipment and a written statement of medical need for in-flight use. Its medical-assistance FAQ requires a physician-signed MEDIF when medical equipment will be used during a flight and asks for submission at least five days before departure. Ask which requirements apply if you are carrying the machine for use only at your destination; do not assume the same paperwork applies to both situations.

Air India: medical clearance and paperwork FAQ

IndiGo lists CPAP machines as assistive devices carried without an additional charge or reduction in the baggage allowance, subject to cabin size and weight restrictions. Its guidance says a device that cannot fit may be placed in the hold. Confirm how your packed device will be handled and obtain separate permission for any intended in-flight use.

These examples are airline-specific, not a rule for every flight. Check the operating carrier for codeshare journeys and connections. CPAP supplies air under pressure; oxygen cylinders, portable oxygen concentrators and ventilators can have different travel requirements.

Pack a complete, protected setup

  • Check the machine, mask, breathing circuit, filter and approved power connection before leaving. Pack the components you actually use, not only the device.
  • Follow the device’s transport instructions, especially for the humidifier chamber. Protect the equipment and accessories from spills and damage.
  • Keep the model details, prescription or treatment information, any required airline documents and support contact accessible. Tell screening staff you are carrying medical equipment.
  • Ask about airport and airline liquid rules before carrying a water supply; arrange access to the water specified for your exact humidifier at your destination.

Plan destination power and any battery separately

Read the device’s own adapter label and confirm the destination supply and plug connection. A plug adapter changes the plug shape; it does not prove that the electrical supply or battery is compatible. Ask the equipment provider before connecting an unfamiliar power source.

Before buying a travel battery, obtain compatibility confirmation for the exact CPAP model and connection. Then ask the airline about the battery chemistry, marked capacity, quantity, packing and approval requirements. Do not rely on a seat socket or a generic power bank as your treatment power plan.

Air India’s cabin-baggage guidance places spare or loose batteries in hand baggage and requires individual protection for power banks. Check the current limits for your actual battery and journey rather than copying a capacity from another traveller.
