The best CPAP mask is one that seals comfortably during your usual sleep positions and works with your prescribed therapy. Face shape varies from person to person; ethnicity, gender and a size used in another mask are poor substitutes for an individual fitting.
The main choices
Nasal pillows seal at the nostril openings. They leave much of the face clear and can suit people who dislike a larger mask, but the pillow size and angle matter. Soreness is a reason to review fit, not tighten the headgear further.
A nasal mask seals around the nose. Some designs sit under it instead of covering the bridge. This can change where pressure falls on the skin, so identify the actual contact points rather than relying on the product name.
An oronasal or full-face mask covers the mouth and nose, or seals below the nose while covering the mouth. It may help when significant mouth leak persists with a nasal interface. It is not automatically the best option for every mouth breather: nasal blockage and fitting problems still need attention.
There is no universal pressure at which everyone must switch mask styles. The mask's approved use, fit at prescribed pressure and your comfort all matter.
Make the fitting realistic
Ask the provider to use the sizing guide for that exact model. Try the mask with the device running at the prescribed settings, then lie in your usual position and turn your head. Check for air toward the eyes, painful strap pressure and hose pull. A seal that works while sitting upright may shift against a pillow.
Glasses, facial hair, dentures, skin sensitivity, hand movement and the ability to remove the mask all affect the choice. A different cushion shape may help more than pulling the straps tighter. Ask how to release the mask quickly and identify the intentional exhaust vent; keep that vent unobstructed.
Before paying
Confirm that the quoted kit includes the frame, cushion, headgear and required connector. Ask whether replacement parts are available and obtain any trial or exchange terms in writing. An opened mask may have different return conditions from unopened stock.
At home, follow the mask's cleaning instructions and inspect the cushion, frame and straps for damage or loss of fit. Persistent leak, skin injury or mouth dryness deserves a fitting review. Buying a different mask should solve a specific problem, not simply follow a popularity ranking.
